Guitar Tuner for iPhone

Chromatic guitar tuner with 30 alternate tunings preset, on-device mic pitch detection, no ads, no subscription — instead of GuitarTuna’s ad-loaded free tier or Fender Tune’s $5-per-month Pro.

Planned Swarmval app. Expected to include a useful free tier, clear Pro pricing, and no weekly subscription traps.

Features

Built around the work people actually need to finish.

Chromatic + 30 alternate tunings

Standard, Drop D, DADGAD, Open G, Open D, Open C, Half Step Down, Full Step Down, Nashville High Strung, plus bass and 7/8-string tunings. Cycle presets without typing notes.

On-device pitch detection

Accelerate vDSP runs the FFT locally. No upload, no server. Works in Airplane Mode. Latency under 50ms on iPhone 12 and newer.

No ads, no subscription

GuitarTuna is free but pushes ads after every tuning. Fender Tune’s good features are behind $5/month Pro. Swarmval Guitar Tuner is paid once and shows nothing else.

Cents-precise needle

Visual needle shows cents flat/sharp. Fine enough for studio tuning, fast enough for stage.

Works with iPhone mic or guitar interface

Plug a guitar into a USB-C interface and the app uses that input directly. Otherwise the iPhone mic works in a quiet room.

Buffet of bass + 7-string

Bass tunings (4-string standard, 5-string low B, 6-string) and 7-string and 8-string presets out of the box.

Free vs Pro

Try the workflow first. Upgrade when the limits matter.

Swarmval apps avoid surprise weekly pricing. The upgrade path is visible before purchase and support links are easy to find.

Free

  • Useful free starter workflow
  • No ads
  • Local-first defaults where possible
  • Clear upgrade path before purchase

Pro

  • Higher limits
  • Batch or advanced tools where relevant
  • Full-quality export where relevant
  • Fair monthly, annual, or lifetime options when supported

FAQ
How is this different from free tuners like GuitarTuna? +

GuitarTuna is free at the cost of ads after every use and a paywall on alternate tunings. Guitar Tuner is paid once, removes all ads forever, and includes 30 alternate tunings on day one.

Does it need internet? +

No. Pitch detection runs on-device. Works on a plane, in the basement, at a venue with no cell signal. Verify by enabling Airplane Mode.

Will it work for bass and 7/8-string guitars? +

Yes. Bass standard (E A D G), 5-string (B E A D G), 6-string bass, 7-string standard with low B, and 8-string with low F# are all preset.

How accurate is the pitch detection? +

±1 cent in a quiet room with a guitar near the mic, or via a USB-C interface. Fine enough for studio tuning, fast enough for live use.

Can I use it with a tuning fork or reference pitch other than A=440? +

Yes. Reference pitch is adjustable from A=415 (baroque) to A=466 (period brass / some metal tunings) in 1 Hz steps. Useful for orchestral pit work, period instrument practice, or downtuned metal sessions where the band tunes to a non-standard reference.

Does it work with ukulele, mandolin, or banjo? +

Yes. Pro tier ships preset tunings for ukulele (GCEA standard, baritone DGBE), mandolin (GDAE), 5-string banjo (open G), and tenor banjo. The chromatic mode works for any stringed instrument regardless of preset.
