Countdowns+ charges $4.99 per month ($60/year) for what is fundamentally a date subtraction with a widget. Countdown Widget by Swarmval ships the same features (Lock + Home Screen widgets, themes, Live Activities) at standard portfolio pricing: $4.99/mo with a 3-day trial, $14.99/yr, or $19.99 lifetime. After year 1 you break even; after year 5 you save $280.
Why are countdown apps so often subscription-only? +
Because the App Store is flooded with copycats and “countdown apps” was specifically flagged in Sensor Tower’s 2024 fleeceware report alongside body-shape and zip-file apps. The functionality is trivial (a date subtraction); the prices are predatory.
Does the Lock Screen widget update in real-time? +
iOS Lock Screen widgets update on a system schedule (typically every 5–15 minutes), not real-time. The countdown shows the correct number of days/hours when it last updated. For sub-minute precision on events less than 24 hours out, the Dynamic Island Live Activity updates more frequently.
Can I share a countdown with a partner / friend? +
Sharing is a screenshot tap — the app generates a styled image of the countdown that you can iMessage or post. There is no cloud-shared countdown (no shared account, no shared backend). For coordinated wedding/baby/trip countdowns, both people add the same date locally.
What’s the longest countdown it handles? +
Practically: dates up to 100 years in the future. There’s no use case for longer; the countdown widget would just say “36,000+ days”.
Will my event data leave the device? +
No. Event titles, dates, theme choices, photos all stay on-device. There is no Swarmval backend, no third-party analytics. Verify by enabling Airplane Mode — the widget keeps updating from the local data.
